Q: Why should I publish my work with a new independent press?

A: Small, independent presses are known for having smaller budgets, but also for being more innovative and taking bigger risks than large publishers. Modern Artist Press is a new woman-owned independent press, looking to champion books that tell new stories with linguistic artistry. The press is just starting out, so we are building our first frontlist. This means that I can offer each author who publishes with Modern Artist Press more consideration, more time, and more resources for their creative ideas.

Q: Why does Modern Artist Press focus on literary fiction?

A: Recent industry discussion has questioned whether “literary fiction” is still a meaningful term, but I take an expansive view on definitions. I believe in the power of great writing to entertain, depict, question, excite, inspire, and connect. Novels, short stories, and hybrid works do all of this and more. I am also excited by the ways today’s authors are blurring the divisions between genres and producing great works of art for us to read.

Q: Are you going to publish work by white European and American men?

A: While the numbers are starting to change, the historical statistics for published works by marginalized people are woefully low. As a cis white woman, my presence doesn’t change the demographics of the publishing industry, but I want to make my impact by promoting new literary voices. This does not mean that I will automatically reject manuscripts submitted by white European and American men. I am looking for new stories told with linguistic artistry, and I am committed to amplifying the work of writers and artists who are women, non-binary; Black, Indigenous, Latina/o/x, Arab, Asian; LGBTQ+; neurodivergent, disabled; multinational, multicultural, and multidisciplinary. Their stories should be told, and I believe readers are hungry for them.
